Just because a clip is designated public domain by the internet archive, or by people who upload it, does that mean it is definitely public domain. I found a clip of Marilyn Monroe that was produced by a well known producer that said it was public domain, but... really? The uploader appears not to exist, the production company still does, and I imagine all the film clips from major movie companies must own the rights, not to mention possibly the estate of Ms. Monroe herself.
What am I not getting here? I am producing a documentary, and would hate to use some of this footage, and then find out after it's in place that I don't have the rights to it.
Any answers or ideas on this subject? Thanks!
